Winter skin saviours – Featuring Weleda, Dr Lipp and The Earth Works cosmetics

winter skincare

In the UK we are in the middle of quite an impressive cold snap. I don’t think I have ever seen snow like it in my lifetime, so I am layering on the beauty products trying to save my skin from completely drying out in the cold. I thought I would share three products I use a lot, these are good all year round but especially good in cold weather.

Weleda Skinfood* – Skinfood is Weleda’s cult product, loved by celebrities and used by make up artists all over the world. The formula remains unchanged, even though the product is over ninety years old! Skinfood is a very rich cream, it does lean towards a balmy texture but I still consider it a cream because it does have some water in the formulation. Skinfood is a multi-tasking product and can be used to tackle dry, rough skin anywhere. I love it as an overnight foot treatment, as a hydrating and moisturising mask and as a hand cream. Skinfood contains peanut oil, beeswax, almond oil and lanolin as well as herbal extracts of pansy and calendula. The scent is gorgeous, lavender, sweet orange and rosemary essential oils.

Dr Lipp Original nipple balm for Lips* – This is a really simple product; Just one ingredient, 100% pure lanolin. It is a thick balm, that has no scent or colour and again is a multi-purpose product. My preferred way to use it is a protective lip balm, the reason it works so well is that it creates a barrier against the elements and unlike a lot of balms, stays put on the lips. It has a slight shine, but isn’t too glossy and also works well on dry or sore patches of skin. I have tested quite a few lanolin based ointments and creams whilst breastfeeding as it is the recommended treatment for cracked nipples, Dr Lipp is one of my favourites because the texture doesn’t feel as sticky as some of the other brands available. The squeeze tube is a nice size for popping in your handbag too.

The Earth Works Cosmetics Virgin Coconut and Lime Body butter* – This product has been a favourite of mine over the years, if you love a gorgeously scented and deeply moisturising body balm I can’t recommend this enough. Unlike the other two products featured, this body butter is suitable for vegans. It has Shea butter, coconut oil, cocoa butter and almond oil. The lime essential oil gives it a nice fresh scent which works well against the sweetness of the butters and oils. This butter melts and absorbs easily, but blitzes dry skin, I just love it!
