One of the areas of natural beauty that is growing the fastest is make up. Once upon a time the performance of natural make up compared to it’s conventional counterparts was overall considered pretty disappointing, add to that the limited choices in terms of colour palettes and textures and you can see why make up was trailing behind other areas of the industry. Things are changing though, with the rising demand for completely cruelty free brands, indie brands are having their moment in the spotlight, thanks to the fact that nearly all the of the major cosmetic companies trade in China, where animal testing in most cases is mandatory to enter the market.
As is the case with skincare, people have become more and more aware of some of the ingredients in their favourite make up products and are looking for alternatives. Ingredients like parabens, heavy silicones and mineral oils have all been unpopular for a while, but something I don’t see discussed as often is that nearly all conventional make up products contain microplastics; as these are leave on products, they are not included in the recent ban and so brands have little incentive to reformulate. For all these reasons the area of natural and cruelty free make up is one that I can see growing the fastest in the next few years.
To help you navigate the market and to find out some of the best make up buys, I asked some of my favourite make up artists, all of whom work with natural, organic and cruelty free brands in their kit, which products work for them and their clients.
Laura Jane Sessions – Find her at Organic Make up artist
A make up artist with over twenty years experience in all aspects of make up, Laura predominantly works in Film and TV. Laura has been on a mission to green up her kit as much as possible and writes about her proffesional experience over on her beautiful blog Organic Make up artist. I really love her honest and in depth reviews. Here are Laura’s picks:
Kjaer Weis Cream Foundation – “This is my all time favourite organic foundation. It has a rich creamy formulation and blends like a dream. It goes on incredibly sheerly yet is easy to build up if you require a more medium level of coverage.”
Dr Bronners Lavender Hand Sanitiser – “An essential part of my pro kit, I’ve used this hand sanitiser for so many things (including anti-bac-ing my hands!!). Not only does it smell divine (I apply it to my hands pre-make-up application) but it also contains fairly traded ingredients.”
Beyond Organic Skincare Eye make-up Remover – “This is a relatively new addition to my kit but one I fell instantly in love with. It has a particularly luxurious feel to it and leaves the delicate eye area feeling nourished and plump – oh and it is pretty good at removing eye make-up too!!”
Jane Iredale Beyond Matte HD Powder – “This powder is another key part of my kit. It’s great for male grooming jobs as well as beauty make-ups. The mineral based powder looks great on camera and knocks back shine without leaving a flat finish.”
Tahira Herold – Find her at Beauty By Tahira
Tahira is a make up artist and content creator with over twenty years of experience in the beauty industry in TV, film and commercials. Tahira loves to champion small brands and people who are creating beautiful products whilst also repsecting people, animals and the planet. Take a look at her beautiful instagram feed and blog for gorgeous photos of her work as well as lot’s of greenbeauty recommendations. Here are Tahira’s picks:
Ilia Foundations – “This foundation has a gorgeous texture and buildable coverage.”
Lily Lolo eye palettes – “Really convenient palettes with a variety of shades.”
RMS Volumising Mascara – “For the perfect application every time.”
Benecos Blushes – “These blushes are budget friendly and have lovely colours”
Absolution Cosmetics Lipsticks – “They have amazing Velvet matte, bright shades”.
Vanderohe No 1 Nourishing face serum – “I love this serum for preparing the skin.” I am also a fan of the Vanderohe serum, which works beautifully under make up, see my review here.
Lou Dartfod – Find her at Lou Dartford Green Beauty
Lou started her career in make up over fifteen years ago, initially training in special effects. Ten years ago she made the conscious decision to make her proffesional kit as clean and ethical as it can be. Lou was named one of the top 25 personalities in Natural Beauty in 2017 and her blog and social media are a wealth of knowledge for anyone with an interest in natural beauty. Here are Lou’s picks:
Benecos lip and eye pencils – “I absolutely love these pencils as the colour pay off is great, they’re lovely and smooth so go on well and have great longevity too. The fact they are less than £4 makes them even more lovable.”
Vapour Stratus Soft Focus Instant Skin Perfector – “I love to use this to add a beautiful glow to skin. I also love to use this as a mixing medium, particularly with the Kjaer Weis Cream foundations. It helps to sheer them out and make them a bit more pliable, while also adding radiance.”
Absolution Lipsticks – “The original 6 colours from this line are semi-matt and were such a welcome addition to my kit when they were first released. Natural and organic lipsticks were always notorious for being shiny and shimmery, so when these came out with no shimmer and strong bold colours they were an instant hit. They are still my go-to lip products, and get used so much.”
Cream blusher – “I’m currently loving the Ilia blush sticks, but also love Tata Harper, Ere Perez, Vapour and RMS – big fan of a cream blush!! I think every skin can benefit from one as it adds instant life and radiance.”
Thank you so much to Laura, Tahira and Lou for sharing some of their favourite products, I know my wish list has grown substantially now, natural make up shopping has never been so easy. What are your favourite make up products? I would love to hear from you.
