I was absolutely delighted to be asked to be one of the Judges of the Beauty Shortlist Mum and Baby Awards this year. These awards are some of my favourites and I tune in every year to see the list of winners and finalists. The awards are run by Fiona Klonarides of the Beauty Shortlist and take place a few months after the main awards which are incredibly busy, with entries from all over the world. It is without a doubt Fiona’s integrity that make these awards shine. There is no voting, just thorough testing and judging, this means that brands of all sizes, no matter how new have the same chances of winning, as it is judged on how good the product is rather than how well known.
My natural beauty journey started with my first pregnancy, so I know the value of well formulated products for Mums and babies. These awards are a testament to just how much the market has changed in just a few short years, there is now more choice than ever before and because the awards themselves are global, there is something for everyone’s shopping list. As judges we obviously know the feedback we have given, but we don’t know who the overall winners and finalists will be until the day. So I was very excited to wake up and join in with the social media buzz yesterday. I thought I would talk you through some of my favourite discoveries from the Beauty Shortlist Mum and Baby awards and the brands I have added to my shopping list for the future.
Carelia Petits (Best baby skincare brand International winner) – This Spanish brand was one of my favourite discoveries of the awards for babies and toddlers. With impressive formulas and impeccable presentation Carelia is one to bookmark if you are searching for a gift for a new mum. I am half Spanish and spent a few years living over there with family, products for babies and children an important part of the market, so it doesn’t surprise me that Carelia emerged as one of the big winners. Every product was fantastic and I especially loved the wonderful scents, practical packaging and how effective the entire range was.
Good Bubble – This is a lovely baby and toddler brand that offers affordable yet well formulated products. All the products we tried lived up to their claims and the fun, Gruffalo themed packaging went down a storm with the kids. Our personal favourite was the Gruffalo moisturiser with prickly pear, which has a light fruity scent and was deeply moisturising on the skin. This is what I would class as a free from brand, avoiding some of the main no no’s like SLS, parabens and mineral oils. Good Bubble doesn’t use essential oils in its scents, instead opting for phthalate free synthetic fragrance making them a good options for little ones who are unable to tolerate any essential oils.
CWTCH Natal skincare – CWTCH is the Welsh word for hug and is a fantastic name for this luxurious mum and baby brand. Every product felt utterly pampering, extremely effective and the warm and comforting scents really stood out. The hero product for me was the Cariad Bump, Breast and Body mask; an intensive leave on treatment, to nourish and improve skin elasticity. I loved everything about this product, the texture, scent, how it felt on the skin and just how moisturising it was, perfect for a growing bump. The CWTCH ingredients list are incredibly impressive, in fact they read much more like facial skincare lists than body care, no expense has been spared on the best quality ingredients, I wish I had known about this brand when I was pregnant! Unsurprisingly CWTCH scooped five awards yesterday, very well deserved.
Inner Senses – This lovely aromatherapy brand was a twice winner in this years awards with their Mum and baby oils. The bloom pregnancy body oil was also a winner in the main Beauty Shortlist awards this year and the blend of oils is perfect for nurturing skin during pregnancy. Rosehip, almond, borage and avocado oils make the blend rich enough for dry skin, but easily absorbed and it has a lovely light fresh scent, which is important as so many of us become sensitive to strong scents in pregnancy. A Lovely aromatherapy brand with blends for all occasions.
Mallow and White Soothe and Restore Balms – I have been a fan of Mallow and White for a few years now, the brands less is more ethos works perfectly when you are talking about Mum and Baby products. I have fallen absolutely head over heals for the Soothe Balm, which won an Editor’s choice award, in fact if I had to highlight a single favourite from these awards, this would be it. Both balms have a shea butter base, but melt with ease on the skin. Soothe is free from essential oils, but has a gorgeous natural fragrance thanks to the cucumber oil, which I just adore. The Restore balm has a really wonderful relaxing scent thanks to the lavender, geranium and orange essential oils and pomegranate seed oil helps replenish the skin.
Egyptian Magic balm – Was a huge hit in my house, this all natural, scent free balm comes in a huge tub that can be used from top to toe. This was my sons favourite product, in fact it now lives in his room! Great for dry knees, mystery rashes and as a lip balm. The gender neutral, fuss free packaging makes this a great household staple for all the family.
Other worthy mentions include new to me brand Lucidlure, their body oil won an editors choice award, but I was also very impressed with the body butters and eye oil. O’Moi skincare from Denmark, picked up several awards for their whipped body butter and Baobab balm as well as their very lovely Camellia moisturiser which is great for sensitive skin. Aromatherapy brand Tisserand excels in the stress less category with its mists and diffuser oils, the Pillow spray is a personal favourite of mine for several years now as are the aromatherapy oils. Shui Me is another new discovery and I was very impressed with the scent throw and longevity of the reed diffusers, in particular the relax scent. I also really enjoyed the Iya body food from Naturally Tribal, perfect for very dry skin.
Brands that I didn’t judge in the awards but I was delighted to see on the list of Beauty Shortlist Mum and Baby winners include Weleda and Green People, we use products from both of these ranges and they are excellent. In fact I have most of the winners in my personal stash! In particular the Weleda nipple balm is a staple in our breastfeeding journey. I was delighted to see Weleda bagged seven awards in total, including Best Eco friendly brand. I have now added the Little Aurelia range to my wish list, I am a fan of the skincare already and they were the winner of the Best Baby brand category, with their beautifully presented products. I also am keen to try the One Seed perfumes, winner of the best perfume category. It was so much fun to part of these awards and I loved discovering some excellent new to me brands. If you are a Mum or if you are expecting a baby, these awards are a great way of building a wishlist. Find the full list of Winners and Finalists here.
